The first Spices Park in Puttady in Idukki district in Kerala constructed by the Spices Board at a total cost of over Rs 28 crore was inaugurated by the Leader of Opposition, Mr Oommen Chandy on Sunday, 13th Feb 2011 in the presence of hundreds of spices growers, traders and exporters.
The construction of the Spices Park was completed the Board in less than three years time and this deserves great praise and appreciation, Mr Oommen Chandy said while delivering the inaugural address. He hoped that the park will help in solving lots of problems of growers. Mr PT Thomas, MP in his presidential address remarked that the Idukki package for development of Idukki is given due importance. The function was addressed by MLAs, Mr KK Jayachandran and Mrs Bijimol, Mr Alex Kozhimala, Idukki district panchayath President, Mr George Uthup, Vandanmettu Panchayath President, Mr KT Michael, Idukki District Panchayath Member, Mrs Jancy Regi, Kattappana Block Panchayath Member, Mrs Philomina Raju, Vandanmettu Panchayath Vice president, Mr Muraleedharan, Spices Board member, Mr MK Scaria representing cardamom growers, Mr Basheer Ahamed representing cardamom auctioneers, Mr PS Krishnamoorthy reprsentating cardamom traders. Mr V.J. Kurian, IAS, Chairman of Spices Board who delivered the welcome address explained in detail the importance of the park and its significance in the coming years. Mr Roy K Paulose, Spices Board Member. proposed a vote of thanks.
Mr Njallani Mathew, who was instrumental in identifying the high yielding variety of cardamom named “Njallani” which revolutionalised the cardamom farming sector, was honoured by the Spices Board at the function by presenting him a fixed deposit of Rs 8 lakh. The amount was realised from the Cardamom Development Fund
